Welcome to Japanese with Tony Sensei!

App update [2010.07.26]: Our first iPad app, Kanachan's Kana Reference Table is now available on the app store! We are also close to finishing our first iPhone app, Kanachan's Read the Hiragana. I will post a link to the app here when it becomes available on the app store, but in the meantime you can watch this first draft video walkthrough to get an idea of what the app is like. [More...]

A celebration of Akihabara geekery. My day is so much brighter now after having watched this.

Hi, all. The following is an announcement of a study related to what resources you use when you study Japanese. I thought some of you might be interested in taking part in. If you could take a few minutes to fill out the survey, that would be very helpful:

In class the other day we talked about how Japan is creating a robot army to take care of its aging population, but I forgot to mention their other goal—total break dance world domination.

Tokyo Complaints Choir

Complaints Choirs have a weird history, which you may want to read about here:

http://www.complaintschoir.org/history.html

The attached video is the Tokyo version, sung of course in Japanese (with English subtitles). This video is currently under hot discussion on a mailing list for Japanese teachers that I belong to. I just love how truly weird the world is becoming... (^-^;

"Genki" vocab & grammar Anki deck

Attached is an Anki deck created by a previous student (thanks, Cory!) that contains all of the vocab (and grammar?) from Genki Vol I.

This deck has been converted to the new format used by the latest version of Anki, so if you're having problems opening it, you might want to see if your Anki install is up to date.

Video: Origin of the zodiac animals (Japanese)

Tony's picture

「まんが日本昔(むかし)ばなし」 is a wonderful Japanese animated series that creates animations from Japanese and other fairy tales. This one is one of the many versions of the story of how 12 animals got assigned to the years of the Chinese zodiac.

There are lots of great stories in this series, and unlike many Japanese TV shows they don't maintain a squadron of copyright ninjas to pull down episodes uploaded to YouTube. Search YouTube for まんが日本昔ばなし to get a long list or other stories.

Let me know if you stumble across any that you particularly liked!

Help!

Can someone please remind me of where the  g-time project that has the convenient list of vocab and grammar to help study for the final exam that one of you made? I would really like to use it. Thank you

Karaoke "Sakura Kiss"

I sang "Sakura Kiss" by Kawabe Cheico. If you've seen Ouran High School Host Club, then you will definitely know this tune. I got the lyrics from:
