Genkier users

Tony's picture

This group is intended for users of the "Genkier" podcasts that Tony produces. This is a good place to come and ask questions about anything that wasn't clear in a given podcast, make suggestions for improvements on current and future podcasts, and to point out any errors or other problems with the content of existing podcasts.

Genkier (enhanced) podcasts

These podcasts are "enhanced" with images to accompany the narration in the podcast. I recommend that you use these podcasts in preference to the "MP3" versions, below. You can either view the podcasts online, or using a video iPod or compatible device (is there such a thing?)

Radicals

Shutoh's picture

Sensei,

I was wondering about the Radicals. I think, specifically the ones that are just radicals and don't really have meanings associated with them.  The なべぶた and the ふるとり radicals come to mind.  I can see how learning them will help you write other kanji, but what I don't see is how the ふるとり radical helps to understand what, say, 曜  means.  Any sagely advice?  ありがとう。

Anki Deck Problems

Shutoh's picture

I installed the anki program and downloaded the deck vocabulary decks from your posts.  The other Remembering the Kana link in your pdf doesn't work.  I was trying to follow the instructions in your pdf, but when I go into the Settings > Inactive Tags, the only items for me to select are Basic/Forward/Reverse but doesn't have any of the other things you list in your pdf.  Is this because I am using the Vocabulary Lesson 1 anki file?  The card for '21 years old' doesn't have any audio.  Are there supposed to be any kana or kanji that show up when you click on 'show answer'?

UPDATE:  I found the kana deck on the page post the list of padcasts and anki decks.  I got the deck to work for the hiragna lesson 1.  Is there supposed to be sound with it also?

I have two different computers.  On my PC I got the vocabulary lesson 1 to work - it shows a picture with the English word under it, when I click on the "show answer" it had sound and gives the answer in Japanese, but no written answers.

On my MAC I got the vocabulary lesson 1 to work - it shows a picture and when I click on "show answer" it shows me an english word (e.g. the first slide shows a sign with the cat and english writing, I click show answer and it shows the word "English"; there is not any sound; there is not any Japanese writing.)??

Genki Lesson 1 Vocab (voiced) deck available

I've just uploaded the first of my Anki decks. The "front" of each card in this deck has only a recording of the target Japanese word along with an image of that word. I hope that this will be more effective than straight J<->E cards, which may create too strong of an association between the English and Japanese words. By doing so, it might be easier to learn to "think in Japanese".

This is the first deck like this that I've created, so I would love to hear your impressions and comments!
You can download the deck from the following URL:
